Some Thoughts on Prevention

ON THIS SUBJECT,
I have a few thoughts to share. These are borne out of my own experiences of interacting with people, reading the news of the day, and observing life.

We need to remember to speak out against bigotry and intolerance at every opportunity. We won't always agree on just how to proceed with this — or on how we should live our lives. But we need to recognize and uphold the good in ourselves and others. There is no warrant — especially any Biblical warrant — for defamation or for the taking of innocent life. I must stand by my words here — especially in the face of some misguided pseudo-religious fanatics who would try to twist the historical parts of Scripture to suit their own agendas.

The home environment of children, from the day they're born, is a crucial factor in how they will turn out. To reduce their odds of becoming criminals, it is important that children have a stable, nurturing home environment, where they feel secure and loved. Also, it is critical that they be allowed plenty of time just to be kids. At the same time, throughout the growing-up years, they need to know that certain things will be expected of them as responsible citizens.

One reason I learned a great deal about kids is that I was once a kid myself. Also, when my one niece and six nephews were small, I spent time with each one of them. From them, I learned that good parenting demands love, dedication, patience, and consistency. The progress of mankind depends on these these things.

I put this page onto the Web at the preview stage so that I might get the benefit of a number of second opinions, plus ideas from any of you who might like to extend the discussion a bit. I continue to welcome your input.
